Factor’s That Influenced India’s Take on Libya

After a deliberate attempt to uproot the Gadaffi regime from Libya, NATO countries launched the air strike against Libyan army under the mentorship of USA some weeks before. As expected, response towards the event was mixed. Some countries were clearly against the attack, some in the support and finally some found it good to become hostile. The take of India towards the attempt was pretty clear and S M Krishna, Foreign minister of Indian republic quoted the view of his country very bluntly. The nutshell of his stand depicted that due to lack of transparency and clarity in goals and objective of the armed strikes on Libya, it was very tough for India to communicate and justify its support for this resolution to its domestic constituency.

Socio-Political factors:

He further elaborated that India’s abstention from the support call cannot be viewed as opposition to the resolution but a clear pause to understand the US objectives against Libya in wider prospective. During the Libya crisis, India’s stand was a support to the UNSC resolution and not an obstacle in any manner. If memories are recalled, India had voted in favour of the UNSC resolution 1970 that was purposefully attempted to taking stringent measures to penalize the Gaddafi regime with the interference of International Criminal Court. The major reason behind the Indian abstention is the realities prevailed in the socio-political circle of India.

Being a multi-ethnic and multi cultured society, India’s support to USA against Libya could be taken up in the negative by the Muslim community. Various Muslim think tanks were quoting wider suspicions behind the Obama’s pledge to the Gadaffi’s debacle however India’s concern was the possible military intervention in Libya that could be the big threat in the form of prolonged stalemate and growing radicalisation in West Asia. Various countries and intellectuals remarked the India’s foreign policy and its abstention on UNSC Resolution 1973 is a sheer example of inaction and its reluctance to execute the global responsibilities India is always known as the bearer of. Experts of foreign relations have another story to say. They endorse the step of India highly justified and inspired by its decision its decision to vote against Iran’s clandestine nuclear weapons program.

Economical factors:

The major factor behind the India’s take is the economic realism of the India with Libya. If employment survey of India is to be quoted, an estimated number of 18,000 Indians are currently working in this oil rich country and in addition various Indian companies are doing good work in several service domains specially hydrocarbon, power, construction and IT. In last three decades, Indian organizations have executed several projects like building hospitals, houses, schools, roads, power plants and airports in the Libya successfully. In the last five years, a number of Indian companies have established their presence in the Libya in various sectors. Among some prominent names BHEL, OVL, IOC and Oil India are on the top of the list.

Evidently India couldn’t take any risk on its social and financial engagements with the Libya by endorsing the blind war from USA and NATO allies.
