CAT not the end of your MBA dreams

Today MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree is thought to be one of the most prestigious and sought after degrees of the world. Everyone seeks to get this degree of post graduation (from engineers to simple graduates) because of its high demands in every sector especially in the money making corporate sector. The world is getting global with modernization and private sector is increasing its influence engulfing the world. Here it won’t be wrong to say that a Management Degree is almost a necessity in today’s world. Moreover as the value of simple diploma and graduation is decreasing, MBA is the most viable option to get a good job as this field offers varied types employment opportunities due to its vastness in its disciplines, namely E-commerce, Finance, Entrepreneurship etc.

MBA comprises the study of the theory and applications of business and management principles that equip students with knowledge applicable to a variety of real world business situations. MBA offers an education in general management along with a more specialized curriculum containing a variety of disciplines relevant to all industries and sectors. Global Management, Finance, Human Resource Management are common MBA concentrations that can be pursued and combined.

CAT (Combined Aptitude Test) is the biggest entrance test held in the country that tests the capability of students to obtain a management degree from the most prestigious Management Institutions of the country. The IIM is the concerned authority which carries out the CAT entrance exam every year. The exam is fairly tough as a huge number of candidates appear in exam to grab the top spot. Selection is done by short listing the top scorers in the written test, followed by a GD (Group Discussion Round) and then an interview held by the institution. The top Rankers get into profound institutions like IIM A (Indian Institute of Management Ahmadabad), IIM C(Indian Institute of Management Kolkata),IIM B(Indian Institute Of Management, Bangalore).

Common Admission Test

The CAT exam is held in order to scrutiny a candidate’s presence of mind and mental abilities. CAT exam consists of Quantitative, DI and Reasoning, English and GK. The time allotted for the exam is 2 hour and is mainly objective type. However, CAT is not the end of the MBA dream. Many of the other tests conducted are reserved for the state level. One of the best colleges in the country JBIMS or Bajaj, state level B-school to B-school aspirants has 85% seats reserved for the state. Therefore all isn’t lost if you don’t crack the CAT and get into the coveted IIMs. TISS, FMS, XLRI and IIFT are some of the institutes established in the country which are far better than some of the new IIMs. Entrance exams other then the CAT that allow one to get a management degree primarily include MAT(Management Aptitude Test)conducted by the Centre for Management Services(CMS),ATMA(Aims test for management admissions),Integrated Common entrance test(ICET) conducted by Andhra Pradesh university, XAT(Xavier Aptitude Test) conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur. The norms decided for each exam include a minimum 3year degree of graduation and the score is valid for 1year.Thus students must overcome the CAT phobia and appear for other management entrance tests.
